Embodied Truth: Finding Ways to Move Together
Created in collaboration with Daniel Burkholder & Kimani Fowlin
Embodied Truth: Finding Ways to Move Together is an ongoing project honoring the blessings and the challenges of being a parent by examining race and gender through the lens of parenting.
Looking for Parent/Collaborators who are interested in creating a performance work exploring how parenting is affected and informed by issues of race and gender within our current culture. Looking for dancers, theater artists, singers, and spoken word artists who are comfortable moving and collaborating to devise an evening length work to be premiered in May 2020.
Rehearsals will begin in early January and continue once a week through the performance dates.
Willingness to collaborate, under the direction of Daniel Burkholder and Kimani Fowlin, in developing movement and text through various creative practices and choreographic tools is a vital skill. Looking for 4 to 6 Parent/Collaborators willing to create community through our work together.
Please wear clothing which is comfortable to move in.
Please note: because we are looking to collaborate with parents who are performing artists, all rehearsals will be family friendly - children and caretakers are welcome at all rehearsals.
About the Project
Daniel Burkholder and Kimani Fowlin have been friends and colleagues since they were undergraduates together, many years ago. Both are now parents concerned about what the future holds for their children. Over the course of conversations they discussed the similarities and differences in their experiences as parents - he a white, married man with a daughter, and she a mixed race, single woman with a son. Out of these conversations they decided to launch Embodied Truth: Finding Ways to Move Together, which explores personal stories about raising children in this #metoo and #blacklivesmatter world through workshops and performances, using spoken word, music, storytelling, and dance.
Embodied Truth: Finding Ways to Move Together is designed to support a communal space that allows for community reflection, discussion, and action.
